In Science of Sports Training Mr Kurz advises alternating hot / cold water in a shower to speed up recovery. Does it mean a drastic change of water temperature or gradual? Thanks.

Drastic. The contrast between hot and cold is the right stimulus here for the autonomic nervous system.
