Walking

Postby backinjured » Feb 11, 2006 12:55

Instead of using my car, I'm thinking of walking to job. Not running, not jogging, just walking. I've discovered that it's a pretty good exercise for my lower back and probably for my knee too. However I'm wondering if it's a good idea to walk that much. It takes between 30 minutes and an hour. I'd have obviously to walk this twice a day, in the morning and afternoon. And almost everyday. I'm very concerned with old age, so if that much walking would make me unhealthy once reaching old age, then tell me! Note that I'm also doing strength/endurance workouts twice a week and intensive MA training twice.

Your answers, tips, comments always very appreciated!

Walking

I will make a special form into which I will move this question and other equally inane posts. There I will comment on these posts--time permitting.

Walking isn't going to take as much of a toll on your body as the intensive martial arts practice(depending on what style you do).

If the training is an intensive external style(kick boxing, grappling, etc, as opposed to something like Tai Chi) you may be better concentrating on your conditioning program for a while and cutting back the MA.

Yeah I decided to concentrate myself on conditionning my body because definately, it is too weak for MA training.

But is walking good for knees? Is there a risk of injury because of doing too much walking and not enough knee flexions or those knee movements during squats or lunges. Could being always upright be bad for my knees? Or is walking strengthening the knees?

Theorically, should someone walking an hour everyday also do lunges an hour everyday in order to avoid imbalances in knee joints?

And my question was also, is two hours 5 days/a week too much ? (If I don't get any pain)

Thanks

Most of those questions only you can answer.

Whether walking is good/bad for the knees is down to the invidual.Although as i said earlier,if you can attend a MA class i'd assume walking is not going to be a problem.

2 hours/5 times a week?-Again,down to you i'm afraid. The only thing you can do is find out through trial and error.
